Elizabeth Peabodys Bookshop

Elizabeth Peabody is also known for her bookstore, which is located in Boston, Massachusetts as she was the first female publisher in Boston and was recognized by many people in that area. It was opened during the summer of 1840 and three months after she opened the bookstore she had the idea of adding foreign authors to her shelfs. She used the library and the selling of foreign books as her main source of income that she needed to provide for her parents and sisters at that time. The bookshop was booming during the mid 1840s as it sold many foreign authors and was the only shop during that time to sell these types of books. 1Many of these books and authors had the same ideology of Transcendentalism and wanted her foreign library to be based around that ideology.

Peabody wanted all of her books that were in the store to have a Transcendentalism viewpoint and wanted the authors that made these books to have the same viewpoint as her also. There were many authors that shared her viewpoints like Margaret Fuller as she held many of her famous conversations at Peabodys bookstore and also Dr. William Ellery Channing who helped Peabody with publishing and the library in general. She had many genres in the stores as well like drama, science, philosophy, history, biographies and even politics.
